The Working Title

What is a working title?

A working title is a temporary title you will use while working on your project. It states what the paper is focusing on.

How do I write a working title?

Below are two examples of how to write a working title. Remember to follow your instructor’s guidelines for composition, corrections or adjustments.

Example 1 divides the title in two parts with a colon.

Part 1 is on topic, and creative.

Dying to be thin.

Part 2 is descriptive, including key themes from your paper.

An examination of the psychological, economic and sociological
factors contributing to anorexia nervosa in North America.

Written out, it looks like this.

Dying to be thin: An examination of the psychological, economic and sociological factors contributing to anorexia nervosa in North America.

Example 2 is a working title that includes all key themes in a one-sentence title. It separates the
main theme from how it will be analyzed / broken down with a comma.

The gentrification St. Henri, an analysis of political will and changing economic circumstances.

‘Bad’ Titles

Don’t write titles like these:

a. Anorexia Nervosa and,
b. The Gentrification of St. Henri.

These titles are too general.
