Selection Criteria

Resources are selected that: 

  • Support the curriculum and course related work (current with an eye on future needs); 
  • Are appropriate for college level studies; 
  • Have received attention by critics and reviewers; 
  • Offer a variety of perspectives and worldviews on controversial topics; 
  • Fill gaps in the current collection in the same or similar subject areas; 
  • Are considered classics or seminal works in a specific area of study; 
  • Are reasonably priced relative to available budget; 
  • Provide a global perspective and promotes equity, diversity and inclusion as well as not prejudicial towards a specific segment of the population;

Many sources are used for selection purposesThese include, and not limited to the following: 

  • Association of College and Research Libraries. Choice Reviews Online https://www.choicereviews.org/. (Accessible from on campus only); 
  • Reviews in scholarly journals found when searching in article databases; 
  • University Press publication catalogues; 
  • Faculty recommendations and suggestions. 

Special considerations are made for titles in the following category:

  • Works published by Champlain College-Saint-Lambert staff and faculty
  • Works published that support teaching and curriculum development
  • Works specialized in the Canadian, Québec and Indigenous perspectives

 

 

Definition

Library resources are defined as print and non-print items organized, stored for ease of retrieval and used to fulfill the needs of the college community.
