Record

An entry in a library catalogue or database.

Your search will result in a list of records. The record will include a description of the entry (title, author, subjects, publication information, abstract, etc.) and may have the full text of the document. The amount of information provided will depend on the database or catalogue that you are using.

Reference Work

A book or publication that contains factual information.

A reference work is not usually read from cover to cover but referred to for quickly finding a piece of information or an overview of a topic. Types of reference works include dictionaries, encyclopedias, handbooks, statistical sources, and subject guides. They can be print or online publications.

Reserves

Reading material (books, essays, articles, etc.) that are in high demand and have been put aside.

The reserves are most often readings chosen by your teacher. They can be read in the library for a short time period (usually 2 hours). Ask at the Loans Desk for more information.
