Glossary of Library Terms: I

Library words explained briefly with French translation. Indexes for direct links.

Index

A list of terms that points the reader to a publication or to a section of a publication that contains the term.

A book may have several types of indexes e.g., general terms, proper names, geographical locations. Each of these indexes include the page numbers where the information can be found. Library catalogues and databases have several indexes including author, title, and subject. The author index lists the authors of all the items in the collection. Searching by the author index will result in a list of all items written by that author. The title index and the subject index work in the same way.
