Library of Congress Classification

Library of Congress Classification (LCC) system is used to assign a code of numbers and letters (a call number) to a publication. The call number determines where the item is located on the library shelf and allows for the items to be grouped by subject.

LCC was developed by the Library of Congress, the United States’ national library. Most college and university libraries use this classification system.

Library Catalogue

A database that allows you to locate all the material contained in the library collection.

The catalogue contains the records of all the material (books, videos, periodicals, etc.) in the library. The record provides a brief description and the location of each item. The description includes the title, author, publication information and subject terms. There may be more information such as an image of the book cover, the table of contents, etc. The location information includes the call number, as well as whether the item is in the library or on loan.

To search for an item you enter your search terms and choose the correct index. You can search by author, title, subject, series, publisher or in all of these indexes at the same time.

Literature Review

One type of literature review is an assignment that helps a student to understand a specific topic and to learn about the most important works available on that subject. You will get to know who the key authors and experts are for the particular field you are researching. Learning about their focus and specialties, you can uncover what is missing in the current research and suggest new ideas or questions for future research.

The process requires summarizing the “literature” (or academic sources) to get the gist of a source and relating it to other important works on the topic.

For more details about literature reviews, see the article on OWL Purdue.
